Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Aggression Provided England's Ace Leaves Egotism Outside.

One snub proved sufficient. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is much too clever not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, even if it is equally on the midfielder to blend into the tactical structures and squad hierarchies essential with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's welcoming fold.

Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is about using it appropriately. Skill counts but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when celebrity takes over. Still, a message has been sent.

The midfielder had much to ponder after being left out of last month’s squad. He watched the national side book their place at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a counterpressing No 10. He heard Tuchel discuss loving the squad's spirit and ethics. Inevitably, he has reacted in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid versus their rivals and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; leaving him out again would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.

The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time not playing has demonstrated that an international career is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover for the 22-year-old after showing that he is not afraid to drop big names.

“There is no problem with him, there is no problem about his personality,” the German said. “Bellingham displays that aggression. It takes a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone need to support him and build a setting where he can [have] his drive towards opponents and for the objectives we are striving for as a team.”

Bellingham dominated most of the attention at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming meaningless matches against one opponent and the other. Any other news? Well, how about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious No 10 requiring love and guidance. He has been absent for the national team since March and has found it hard to reach his best recently but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after how he played in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund recently.

The question, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to pick another youngster once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be excessive? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's style as a result.

It seems unlikely the current manager doing similar if it disrupts the attacking balance. Space exists for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Adam Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be central. The coach wants him near Kane. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, can you play left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “Phil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this fantasy regarding him for years. In my view it matches his abilities the most.”

Tuchel agreed there are occasions when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion for the game, then clearly something is not right, whether it's his role, the setup, it's unclear.

“I think he is also so used to representing Man City in a particular setup, to have a clear task. I think he profits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defend?

The manager discussed Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other drilling in goals from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Interest abounds.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at using Foden as a deep-lying striker versus Serbia or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to get the understanding with Bellingham flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham assisting Kane to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is lacking.

“At this point at some point it becomes the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to be blunt. There is still a feeling of the player under scrutiny. He may not be assured to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants him onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave self-importance at the door. It will make a powerful squad into an more effective one.
