The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her American tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
