A bulky bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.

The winning offer for the 243kg fish was submitted by the operator of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which operates restaurants domestically and overseas.

"The year's tuna brings good luck," stated the company president, a familiar bidder at the traditional first sale.

Referred to as the Tuna King, this industry figure is renowned for placing substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.

Auction Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to journalists that he was "surprised at the winning bid," noting, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price soared before you knew it."

This new purchase exceeds his own notable purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Even after once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to break his own record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously characterized by exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate sushi chain operator, which stated the fish would be served at its locations throughout the country.

The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly prepared for customers at the bidder's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction ended.

"I believe like I've commenced the year in a positive way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," said one happy diner.
