It: Welcome to Derry Releases Second Early on HBO Max
Excitement is building for the chilling show It: Welcome to Derry, which is receiving positive feedback and weaving in themes from other Stephen King works. Just one day after launch, HBO announced that the second installment will premiere ahead of schedule, released fittingly for the spookiest night.
Early Release Particulars
Starting on Halloween night at 3 a.m. EST, the next part of the Derry prequel will launch on the streaming service, before its linear broadcast. Future chapters of the show's first season will continue to air on Sundays on the network and streaming service, building toward the concluding chapter on December 14th.
Show Background
Taking place within the Derry mythology, the new series borrows elements from the classic book while expanding on the world brought to life by the It movie director in It and It Chapter Two. It Chapter One focused on adolescents confronting supernatural evils, making it appropriate that the series follows in those footsteps. However, the debut of HBOâs Welcome to Derry demonstrates it aimed to escalate the fear, delivering more frightening moments than the movies and establishing a brutal tone for the upcoming episodes.
Setting and Themes
Taking place in the 1960s, the series introduces a fresh cast of parents and youngsters residing in a seemingly idyllic town concealing a dark secret. The town functions through a cruel, recurring cycleâdefined by violence, bigotry, and the supernatural, as a evil entity returns every 27 years. While It: Welcome to Derry might sound like it strays too near to the cinematic adaptations on the surface, what sets apart the digital program is its parallel storytellingâunfolding through the viewpoints of young and old at the same time. The kids are especially susceptible to It's terror, but older characters also face dealing with their personal demons born from local discrimination and hidden paranormal elements.
Episode 2 airs on Halloween at midnight PT.
