Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Claim First Wins After Player Detentions

NBA game action

Miami scored 86 opening half points versus the Grizzlies

Miami Heat earned a crushing 146 to 114 win against the Grizzlies in their initial NBA match after guard Rozier was detained over suspected illegal sports betting.

Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also detained as part of a broad federal investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.

But, the Heat were focused as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to be ahead of Memphis by 39 at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and later stated Terry had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.

"We send our thoughts and support for him as he faces the situation."

The Trail Blazers also won their first game since the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and leading the squad to a convincing 139-119 victory against the Golden State Warriors.

"We all had great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests

Speaking about the arrests for the first time, league head Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."

The commissioner further mentioned an league probe into Rozier's actions in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.

"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.

"So, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.

"And 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Terry.

"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
