A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Officials stated the 40-year-old entertainer was confronted by three individuals, one of whom began shooting at him before running away.

The motive of the shooting remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended have been made, according to authorities.

How It Happened

Law enforcement revealed that Stock was targeted as he was departing from a location near the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the site overseeing the setup of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, according to reports.

"It is alleged the deceased was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," authorities said.

CCTV footage showed a suspect with dreadlocks and wearing what appeared to be a guard's attire shooting on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was wounded but fell down across the street.

It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the attack.

Important clues, like cartridges, were found at the scene.

Appeal for Witnesses

Police have appealed anyone who saw the event who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the attack, and officers have been attempting to locate them to find their whereabouts," stated a police chief.

Outpouring of Grief

His family member, Nicole Stock, said the relatives are devastated to understand the tragedy.

"I am in shock. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
"We know he was a champion for numerous individuals. He was a fearless commentator about issues not many people were prepared to discuss. This is a devastating blow."

She requested the citizens to not sharing graphic images from the scene, saying this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's three sons.

Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that was broadcast on a South African TV network.

Beyond his work in broadcasting, Stock was engaged in various business ventures, including private security, providing high-level security services and protecting high-profile events across South Africa.

He was also understood to participate in real estate operations and was involved in property reclaimations.

Condolences Pour In

His death has caused national trauma and prompted an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the authorities and various organizations.

A senior figure said he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's murder.

"He spoke his truth fearlessly and impartially. He even challenged me and my actions as a minister. He was a true embodiment of who we should be," the minister added.

A party figurehead commented the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".

A media executive noted that "Stock was not merely a TV personality. He was a talented storyteller, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a warm soul who brought happiness and vitality to every appearance. His artistic passion left an profound impact."

In a release, the channel he worked for declared Stock was known for his charisma, kindness and intelligent commentary, adding that his influence "will live on".
