Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
The economist commented in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have contributed, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously headed Harvard University, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released messages demonstrated that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before his 2019 apprehension for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the technology organization expressed it understood the economist's determination to step down.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he offered to the governing body," OpenAI stated.
Political Context
This development comes after the entire Congress of the US legislature decided on this week to endorse a measure that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its documents on the case.
The legislation will afterward move to the desk of the White House for approval. Trump has stated he expects to sign the bill, after modifying his view on the issue following objections from his followers.

A group of Epstein-connected messages disclosed by the Congressional committee recently included numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The messages indicated that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with he often attempting to link the official to influential global figures.

After the messages were shared with the wider community, he expressed he took "total ownership for my ill-advised choice to maintain corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and repair relationships with the persons closest to me".
Previous Positions
Summers served in senior posts under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under the former president, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He led the university from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his departure from public commitments recently on this week, he indicated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in the capital where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that he was not connected with the group.
He entered the leadership of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its chief executive OpenAI's head.
