Climate Heating in New England Faster Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Analysis Shows.
The American area renowned for its colonial history, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is undergoing a rapid transformation. New research shows that New England is warming more quickly than almost anywhere else on the globe.
Breakneck Pace of Transformation
The rate of warming in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the continental United States, according to the research. The rate of its temperature rise has reportedly increased notably in the last half-decade.
"Temperatures is not only rising, it's accelerating," said a primary researcher on the project. "It's really accelerated in the past few years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is moving in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."
The analysis places the New England region among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, alongside the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the American South," the researcher added.
Analysis Methodology and Results
For the study, researchers examined multiple data sources on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis encompassed the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They discovered that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet heating by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.
"That is very fast heating, which is worrying," said the study author.
Key Climate Patterns
- Minimum temperatures are increasing faster than maximum temperatures.
- Winters are heating up at twice the rate of other seasons.
- The severe cold characteristic of the region is being reduced.
Oceanic Factors and the "Heat Battery"
A primary reason for this unusual accumulation of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The global seas are absorbing the vast majority of the excess heat captured by greenhouse gases.
In the north Atlantic, an increase of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is directing heated ocean water into the coastal waters, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then pushed inland by prevailing winds.
"The excess heat from global warming is being held in the sea like a huge battery," said the researcher. "This is now being released into the air and New England is a receiver of that heat."
Impacts on Life and Extremes
Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has experienced severe weather shocks in recent years, including devastating floods and extended dry spells.
The rising heat endangers cherished elements of local culture:
- Syrup production is being affected by changing seasonal patterns.
- Winter sports are impacted; an ice hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been canceled or moved repeatedly due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Winter tourism have faced difficulties because of insufficient snowfall.
"I live just outside Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to skate on the local ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That sort of thing has pretty much disappeared from large parts of southern New England."
